Who you are and how you feel in your body isn’t up for debate. Yet, for some reason, we’ve started to debate whether or not trans bodies can exist in the way they desire them to exist.
A few weeks ago, I was reading the comments on a CNN Instagram Reel (I know, I know). The clip was of a small panel of trans service members talking about the current administration’s rule that they can no longer serve their country. The comment section was a mix of support for the soldiers and others calling them crazy.
And it made me think: Everyone who dares to be themselves, who have a vision beyond the binary thinking we’ve been indoctrinated to think in, is, at some point, called crazy.
If crazy means that I’m living authentically, then sign me up. If crazy means I have a dream that I dare to work toward, then sign me up. If crazy means that my expression of self doesn’t fit the binary, then sign me up.
We’re all so afraid of being seen as crazy that we often stop ourselves from doing something that would make us happy. We let the opinions of others—or our imagination—stop us before we start.
Maybe they will think you’re crazy. Maybe they won’t. But do you want to live your life worrying about what other people think of you as you abandon yourself? At the end of your life, will you be thinking about whether or not someone thought you were crazy or about what you wish you would have accomplished if only you dared to be called crazy?
I’m exhausted with people not thinking I’m crazy. I’m tired of worrying about judgment from strangers or even people I know. I’m fed up with the rules that tell me to stay small, that tell me to be black and white instead of the colorful box of crayons I am.
Just because someone is different than you doesn’t mean they’re crazy. Just because you don’t understand who they are or how they feel doesn’t mean they’re crazy. Just because you think you’re “normal” doesn’t mean you’re not “crazy” to someone else.
Yes, you. You’re just crazy, darling. And you deserve dignity, decency, and human rights.
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 Yes!!! Thank you.
